Examine the development and effects of the relationship...
Examine the development and effects of the relationship between Pip and Estella Pip and Estellas story is not about living happily ever after. Dickens never tells us what happens, if anything, between them in the end. He leaves it only that they remain friends. There is a purpose for this. Dickens novel is about Pips quest for Estellas love and what he is willing to do to gain it. I think that the story is never about the love itself. We can see this because in the majority of the story, Estella is only present in Pips heart and thoughts. The actual interaction between the characters Dickens keeps at a minimum. To make this a love story, the characters would have to carry out some sort of loving affection towards eachâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Estella has obeyed her adoptive mother perfectly, and Estella is always honest about herself with Pip. The Estella of the final chapter, restrained by her experience of marriage to Drummle, seems at last prepared to admit Pip to a closer relationship, although they remain friends. I think the relationship between Pip and Estella is quite ironic. A major irony, of situation, occurs when Estella kisses Pip after insulting and degrading him. This makes the reader wonder about Estellas actions and her feeling sympathy for Pip. This keeps the reader vigilant for what will happen next. On page 104 Estella says, Come here! You may kiss me, if you like. This is the type of thing you dont expect Estella of all people to say so when she does say these types of things, it livens up the story. The home Pip grew up in, under the hand of Mrs. Joe, isnt exactly bursting with love. Only Joe seems to translate his love for Pip into kind behaviour. This is possibly the worst start for a love story, so if Pip were to love Estella, he wouldnt really know how to put his feelings into actions. When Pip meets Estella for the first time he sees that Manor House is a place where love has a bad name and little chance of thriving. On page 109 Miss Havisham tells Estella to Break their hearts, my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy! This tells the reader that Miss Havisham is trying to bring Estella so that she cant love, and mostShow MoreRelatedThe Equal Education System9443 Words à  |à  38 Pagesand consequently, the main focus of my Personal Interest Project (PIP) is to investigate how an individualââ¬â¢s socioeconomic status affects their academic success.
